Early Life and Education
Uday Kotak comes from the Kotak family and his journey began with his education at Sydenham College, Bombay University, followed by studies at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Studies. These prestigious educational institutions provided Kotak with the foundation to build a successful career.
Establishment of Kotak Mahindra
In 1985, Uday Kotak founded Kotak Mahindra and initially named it Kotak Capital Management Finance. A year later, Harish Mahindra and Anand Mahindra joined the company, setting it on the path to success.
Over the years, Kotak Mahindra ventured into various sectors. In 1987, the company began operations in the Lease and Hire Purchase markets. In 1990, it established the Auto Finance division, followed by the Investment Banking Division and FICOM, one of India's largest financial retail marketing networks in 1991. Two years later, Kotak Mahindra entered the mutual fund sector, and the merger of Brokerage and Distribution in 1995 led to the formation of Kotak Securities. Eventually, the investment banking division became known as Kotak Mahindra Capital Company.
In 1996, the Auto Finance Business separated to form Kotak Mahindra Prime Limited. During this time, Kotak acquired a significant stake in the Ford group to finance transportation vehicles. In 1998, Kotak Mahindra ventured into the asset management sector with the establishment of Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company. In 2000, Kotak Mahindra merged with Old Mutual plc, expanding its operations into the life insurance sector.
