Soviet Actress and Émigré

Soviet actress Maiya Gendelstein received her theatrical training at the Boris Shchukin Theatre School in Moscow, graduating in 1956 under the guidance of V.K. Lvova. She debuted as an actress in the Moscow Oblast Drama Theater, where she performed from 1956 to 1961.

Family Ties

Born into a theatrical family, Gendelstein's father was director A.A. Gendelstein. Her stepmother was famous singer Edita Piekha. Gendelstein married actor Yuri Panich in 1954, but their union was short-lived. In 1957, she wed screenwriter Evgeny Draбкиn, with whom she remained married until her emigration.

Emigration to Israel

In 1971, Gendelstein left the Soviet Union for Israel. She later divorced Draбкиn while living abroad.

Descendants

Gendelstein had two children:

- Maria Yefimovna Sevela (born 1960): A French historian specializing in Russo-Japanese relations at the Centre de recherche sur les civilisations de l'Asie orientale of the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris.

- A son, born in 1972.
