Early Life and Education
Itzhak Koren was born in Chișinău, Moldova, to Abram and Sura Koren. He graduated from Chișinău's Alexandru Donici Gymnasium and earned a law degree from the University of Iași in Romania.
Activism in Bessarabia
Koren became a prominent figure in Bessarabia's Zionist movement. He served as secretary of the Zeirei Zion youth organization and a member of the World Zionist Organization's Bessarabian branch. He also edited the journals "Tzayt-Fraygn" and "Undzer Veg."
Emigration to Palestine
In 1940, Koren and his brother, Sunea, immigrated to Mandatory Palestine. After his parents perished in the Chișinău ghetto during World War II, Koren founded organizations dedicated to preserving Bessarabian Jewish heritage.
Political Career
Koren entered Israeli politics as a member of the Mapai party. He served in the Knesset (1959-1965, 1969-1973) and as Deputy Minister of Finance and Education. He also held the position of Secretary-General of the World Labour Zionist Movement (1964-1979).
Literary and Historical Works
Koren wrote numerous books and essays on Bessarabian Jewish history and culture, including "Kisinev: 200 Years of Jewish Life in the Capital of Bessarabia" and "The Fate of Bessarabian Jewry." He also edited the Bessarabian Jewish section of the Diaspora Encyclopedia.
Legacy
Throughout his life, Koren dedicated himself to preserving and promoting Jewish culture, particularly the Yiddish language. He founded the World Council for Yiddish and Jewish Culture and served as its president until his death. Koren's legacy continues to inspire efforts to preserve and celebrate Bessarabian Jewish heritage.
