Biography of Vagan Karkaryan
Vagan Karkaryan, an architect, was born on August 22, 1934, in Baku. He graduated from MarhI in 1958. In 1962, he became a member of the Union of Architects of Russia. In 1984, he was awarded the title of Honored Architect of Russia. In 1994, he became a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Building Sciences, and in 1996, he became a professor. From 1958, he worked as an architect at "Gorproekt." From 1965 to 1986, he served as the deputy director for architectural issues at the "Gorproekt" institute. From 1986 to 1996, he was the director of the "SamaraGrazhdanproekt" institute. Since 1996, he has been a professor at SamGASA. From 1964 to 1988, he was the Chairman of the Board of the Kuibyshev branch of the Union of Architects of the USSR. He held various positions in the Union of Architects of the USSR, including being a member of the Board, Secretariat, and Secretary of the Board. He was also a member of the Organizing Committee for the Constituent Congress of the Union of Architects of Russia. Vagan Karkaryan was elected to the Presidium and served as the Secretary of the Union of Architects of Russia. He was also the Chairman of the Council of Organizations of the Union of Architects of the Volga Region and a member of the commission under the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR for the awarding of State Prizes of Russia in the field of architecture. He is a member of the commission for the protection of architectural monuments of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Building Sciences.

Throughout his career, Vagan Karkaryan has worked on numerous projects and buildings. Some of his notable works include the master plan for the development of the city of Kuibyshev (together with N. V. Podovinnikov and N. I. Rozanov), the second stage of the Volga River embankment (together with A. V. Godzevich), the "Volga" hotel (together with A. V. Godzevich), the House of Soviets (the administration building of the region, together with A. G. Morgun and V. B. Chernyak), the design organizations building (Samara Square, together with A. G. Morgun, and N. A. Degtyarev), the Victory Day Fountain (together with V. A. Borisov and artist R. N. Baranov), the Actor's House (together with N. A. Kras'ko), the Marriage Palace (together with A. N. Gerasimov), the development of Molodogvardeyskaya Street (together with V. A. Golosov, V. N. Blokhin), the Metro Administration building (together with A. N. Gerasimov), the residential building on Vilanovskaya Street, 1, the facade and meeting hall of the Samara Provincial Duma (reconstruction), the Kurumoch airport terminal (reconstruction, together with G. A. Vasiliev, K. V. Karkaryan), the 11th microdistrict of the northeastern district, the new series of large-panel residential buildings (together with V. A. Borisov), the hotel on Lenin-Chapaevskaya Street (reconstruction), the project for a new city center in the Central Park area (together with A. T. Kim, Yu. I. Musatov, L. Zaitseva), the development of Lenin Street, the monument to the fallen soldiers in the city cemetery (together with R. A. Arakelyan, Yu. I. Musatov, Yu. V. Khramov), the Armenian chapel (together with A. Mnatsakanyan), and more. He has also been the author of over 50 unrealized projects and has participated in local and all-Union architectural competitions.
