Early Life and Education

Vahagn Khachatryan was born on April 22, 1959, in Sisian, Armenian SSR. He excelled academically, earning a gold medal from Yerevan Secondary School No. 118 in 1976. Khachatryan went on to study at the Yerevan Institute of National Economy (now the Armenian State University of Economics), graduating with an economist qualification in 1980.

Military Service and Career Beginnings

After graduating, Khachatryan served in the Soviet Army from 1980 to 1982. Upon his return, he worked as an economist and head of the economic research laboratory at the "Razdanmash" enterprise from 1982 to 1990. From 1990 to 1992, he served as head of department and deputy general director at the "Mars" factory.

Political Career: Local and National

In 1990, Khachatryan entered politics by becoming a deputy of the Yerevan City Council. He later served as Mayor of Yerevan from 1992 to 1996. During this time, he was a member of the "Republic" faction in the National Assembly of Armenia and served on its Financial, Budget, and Economic Issues Committee. From 1996 to 1998, he served as an advisor to President Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

Civil Society and Opposition

In 2000, Khachatryan co-founded the "Roots" Center for Democracy and Civil Society. He later became vice president of the Political Science, Law, and Economic Research Center. In 2007, he was a representative of the "Impeachment" bloc in the parliamentary elections.

Khachatryan played a key role in the "Alternative" socio-political party, which he co-founded in 2006. He also served as a member of the Armenian National Congress until February 2022.

Minister of High-Tech Industry

On August 4, 2021, Khachatryan was appointed Minister of High-Tech Industry of Armenia.

Presidency

Following the resignation of President Armen Sarkisyan, Khachatryan was nominated for the presidency by the ruling "Civil Contract" party in January 2022. He was elected in the second round of the snap presidential election on March 3, 2022, with 71 votes in favor. Khachatryan's inauguration took place on March 13, 2022.

Political Views

Khachatryan advocates for establishing diplomatic relations with Turkey. He has also expressed support for apologizing to Turkey for past conflicts, including the involvement of the "ASALA" group.

Personal Life

Khachatryan is married and has two children.
