Biography of Valdemaras Chomicius

Valdemaras Chomicius is a former Soviet and Lithuanian basketball player and a renowned coach. He was born on May 2, 1961, in Kaunas, Lithuania. Chomicius played as a guard during his basketball career and was known for his defensive skills.

Early Life and Career

Chomicius was introduced to basketball by his friends, and he quickly showed promise in the sport. Before focusing on basketball, he tried swimming, gymnastics, athletics, and even boxing, excelling in each discipline. However, his passion for basketball prevailed, and he began training under the renowned coach Vladas Janunas at the age of 13.

Chomicius attended the Kaunas Institute of Physical Education and graduated with a degree in physical culture. Throughout his basketball career, he maintained his physical fitness by excelling in other sports disciplines, such as high jump and javelin throw.

From 1978 to 1989, Chomicius played for the renowned basketball team "Zalgiris" Kaunas in Lithuania. He also had a successful international career, playing for various clubs including "Forum" in Spain, "Timsystem" in Italy, and "Saragossa" in Spain.

International Success

Chomicius represented the Soviet Union national basketball team from 1979 and achieved remarkable success. He won championships in all major basketball tournaments, including the Olympics, World Championships, and European Championships. Chomicius was the captain of the Lithuanian national team from 1992 to 1995.

Coaching Career

After retiring from playing, Chomicius transitioned into coaching. He became the director of the Valdemaras Chomicius Basketball School in Malaga, Spain, where he shared his expertise with young players. He also served as a coach for various clubs, including "Olimpas" in Plunge and "Dynamo" in Moscow.

In 2009, Chomicius became the head coach of BC UNICS Kazan in Russia. He later took on the role of head coach for BC Triumph, leading the team to success in the Russian Championships.

Personal Life and Achievements

Valdemaras Chomicius is married to Diana Chomiciene, a doctor and a homemaker. They have three daughters: Aiste, Rasa, and Lina. Chomicius is known for his involvement in the community and co-owns the popular nightclub "Kollegas" in Kaunas. He has also established and financially supports the Valdemaras Chomicius Basketball School in Kaunas.

Chomicius holds several basketball records and achievements. In 1991, he entered the Guinness World Records for scoring 722 points in a 24-hour basketball game. He has also won numerous championships and medals throughout his playing and coaching career, including Olympic gold, World Championships, and European Championships titles.
