A Pioneer of Ukrainian Science Fiction
Origins and EducationIn the heartland of Ukraine, on July 6, 1973, a literary luminary emerged from the city of Kherson. Born as Volodymyr Aвраменко, his journey began at the Nikolaev Shipbuilding Institute in 1990. However, his calling lay in history, and he subsequently graduated from Kherson State University in 1995 with a degree in the subject.
Archaeological Explorations
In the 1990s, Aвраменko ventured into the realm of archaeology, participating in expeditions to uncover the ancient Greek polis of Olvia and the fortress of Mangup in Crimea. His research ignited a keen interest in the historical riddles surrounding the region, particularly the location of the Byzantine fortress Dores.
Literary Debut and Collaboration
It was in the simmering summer of 1998 that Volodymyr's literary collaboration with his brother, Oleg, took flight. Together, they penned their debut novel, "Сутінки Великих" (Twilight of the Great), which underwent a metamorphosis into "Накануне Армагеддона" (On the Eve of Armageddon) in its Russian translation. This work formed the nucleus of their seminal novel, "Все Грани мира" (All the Facets of the World), published in 2000.
Establishing a Literary Empire
Throughout the early 2000s, Aвраmenko's prolific output continued with the release of "Звёзды в ладонях" (Stars in the Palm) in 2001 and "Галактики, как песчинки" (Galaxies as Grains of Sand) in 2002. His partnership with his brother remained consistent, though their individual contributions often veiled.
A Hidden Literary Colossus
If literary critic Alexander Losev had labeled Oleg Aвраменko as a "Kherson hermit," Volodymyr could be considered his steadfast shadow. His last public appearance at Eurocon in 2006 marked a decisive shift, as he retreated from the limelight and embraced a life of literary solitude.
