Early Life and Education
Nikolai Aleksandrovich Baskakov, a renowned Soviet linguist and researcher, was born in 1905. In 1930, he graduated from the History and Ethnology Faculty of Leningrad State University.
Academic Achievements
Baskakov specialized in the Tungusic-Manchu languages, particularly the Nanai language. His contributions to the fields of typology, comparative-historical linguistics, and sociolinguistics earned him recognition as a leading authority. In 1956, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation in philology.
Professorship and Leadership
Baskakov held the position of professor in the Department of General Linguistics at the Humanities Faculty of Novosibirsk University. He played a pivotal role in establishing the faculty and served as its first dean.
Membership in the Academy of Sciences
On June 26, 1964, Baskakov achieved significant recognition by being elected as a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His membership in this prestigious organization further cemented his status as a distinguished scholar.
