Early Life and Education
Viktor Ivanovich Kosolapov was born on November 12, 1919, in Nadezhdinsk, now known as Serov, in the Sverdlovsk region. His father was a factory worker. After completing 10th grade, he enlisted in the Red Army in 1936. In 1938, he graduated from the Perm Military Aviation School for Pilots. He went on to complete the Air Force Academy in 1943.
World War II Combat
Kosolapov joined the front lines of the Great Patriotic War in March 1943. By the end of the war, as a squadron commander in the 594th Assault Aviation Regiment, he had accumulated an impressive record. He flew 177 combat missions, targeting enemy airfields and troop concentrations. In aerial combat, he claimed four aerial victories and destroyed six aircraft on the ground. Moreover, he contributed to the sinking of two German maritime transports and one barge during group operations.
Honors and Recognition
For his bravery and valor, Kosolapov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on May 15, 1946. He also received the Orders of Lenin, the Red Banner (twice), Alexander Nevsky, and the Patriotic War (1st degree), as well as various medals.
Post-War Career
After the war, Kosolapov retired from the military with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1946. He then worked in state security and graduated from the history faculty of Barnaul Pedagogical Institute in 1954. From 1974 until his passing, he served as the director of the Historical and Local History Museum in Tuapse.
Legacy
Viktor Ivanovich Kosolapov passed away on May 9, 1983. His heroism and contributions to the Soviet victory in World War II continue to inspire generations.
