Biography of Valery Klimov
Early Life and EducationValery Klimov, a People's Artist of the USSR and laureate of international competitions, was born on October 16, 1931, in Kiev. He grew up in a musical family and received his first lessons from his father, the renowned conductor Alexander Klimov. At the age of 7, he was accepted into the famous pre-war special music school in Odessa for gifted children, where he honed his skills under the guidance of the distinguished professor Peter Stolyarsky. However, his studies were interrupted by the Great Patriotic War. Shortly before the occupation of Odessa, Valery and his parents were evacuated to the capital of Tajikistan, Dushanbe. After the liberation of Odessa, Klimov returned to the city and continued his education under the guidance of Professor V.Z. Mordkovich.
Early Success
Valery Klimov achieved his first successes during his student years. He was among the winners of the violin competition at the 3rd World Festival of Youth and Students in Berlin. In 1955, he became a laureate of the Marguerite Long and Jacques Thibaud International Competition in Paris, and in 1956, he won the first prize at the Josef Slavik and Frantisek Ondricek International Violin Competition in Prague. In 1957, Klimov became a soloist of the Moscow State Philharmonic. The following year, he gained worldwide recognition by winning the 1st Tchaikovsky International Competition, impressing the renowned composer Aram Khachaturian, who was a member of the jury.

Valery Klimov's performing style is characterized by its charm, sincerity, and emotional depth. His violin playing is often imbued with lyrical tones, which elicit an immediate emotional response from the audience. Klimov has a special affinity for the melodic style of Tchaikovsky's music, with its grand Russian scope. International Performances and Teaching Career
Since 1958, Valery Klimov has performed in numerous cities in Russia, former Soviet republics, and around the world. He has appeared in prestigious concert halls such as the Bolshoi Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Festival Hall and Albert Hall in London, Musikverein in Vienna, Madison Square Garden in New York, Berlin Philharmonic Hall, and Sydney Opera House, among others. Klimov has collaborated with renowned orchestras and conductors, including Yevgeny Mravinsky, Kirill Kondrashin, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Karl Ivanov, Arvid Jansons, Leonard Bernstein, and many others.
In addition to his concert career, Klimov has been a professor at the Moscow State Conservatory since 1974. He was appointed head of the violin department and in 1989, he was invited to be a professor at the Hochschule für Musik Saar in Saarbrücken, Germany. Many of his students have become laureates of international competitions, soloists, chamber musicians, concertmasters, and members of symphony orchestras in Russia and abroad.
Awards and Recognition
Valery Klimov has received numerous awards and titles throughout his career. In 1962, he was honored with the title of "Honored Artist of the RSFSR." In 1971, he became a People's Artist of the RSFSR, and in 1989, he was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR.
