Valeriya Korotenko: A Rising Star in Volleyball
Valeriya Korotenko, born on January 29, 1984, in Baku, is one of the best Azerbaijani volleyball players in history. She has represented both the Azerbaijani national team and the Baku club "Azerrail" with great success.
Early Career
Korotenko started playing volleyball in 1993 as part of her school team. Her talent quickly caught the attention of scouts, and in 2000, she began her professional career as a volleyball player for the Baku club "Lokomotiv."
Achievements
Throughout her career, Korotenko has achieved numerous accolades. In 2005, she was named the best libero of the European Volleyball Championship. She has also played approximately 200 games for the Azerbaijani national team, participating in major tournaments such as the 2006 World Championship, the 2006 World Grand Prix, the 2005 European Championships (finishing in 4th place), and the Olympic qualification tournaments in 2004 and 2008.
Personal Life
Korotenko is married to Nidzhat Mamedov, a professional judoka who also had a background in volleyball. Their shared passion for sports has created a strong bond between them.
A Symbol of Beauty in Azerbaijani Sports
In an April 2007 survey conducted by the Azerbaijani sports internet publication azerisport.com, Valeriya Korotenko was chosen as the sex symbol of Azerbaijani sports among female representatives. Out of the respondents, 40% voted for her, surpassing other notable athletes such as gymnast Dinara Gimatova, figure skater Kristin Fraser, handball player Marina Tankatskaya, and shooter Nigar Bagirova.
Setting New Records
Together with Oksana Parkhomenko, Valeriya Korotenko became the first Azerbaijani volleyball players to compete twice in the Euro Cup “Final Four.” Their achievements have set new standards for Azerbaijani volleyball and inspired a new generation of players.
