Van Cao: A Renowned Vietnamese Composer, Poet, and Artist

Early Life and Career

Van Cao, a celebrated Vietnamese composer, poet, and artist, was born on November 15, 1923, in the port city of Haiphong to a humble working-class family. In 1941, he moved to Hanoi, where he began composing songs. His early hits included "Spring Wharf" and "Waterfall of Dreams."

National Liberation and Political Activism

In 1943, Cao joined the national liberation movement and became a member of the Viet Minh. He wrote the music and lyrics for the "Marching Army," which became the official anthem of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in 1945. After the reunification of Vietnam in 1976, it was adopted as the national anthem of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Criticism and Repression

In 1955, Cao became a member of a group of intellectuals who expressed discontent with the policies of the Communist Party of Vietnam. Following a crackdown on the group, Cao's songs (except for the national anthem) were banned in Vietnam from 1956 to 1958.

Rehabilitation and Legacy

Cao was rehabilitated in 1987. He passed away on July 10, 1995, in Hanoi, at the age of 71, after a battle with lung cancer.
