Van Jones: A Multifaceted Public Figure and Activist
Early Life and EducationAnthony Kapel Jones was born along with his twin sister, Angela, in Jackson, Tennessee in 1968. His father was a high school principal and his mother a schoolteacher. Jones displayed a precocious curiosity and a fascination with computers from an early age.
He graduated from Jackson Central-Merry High School in 1986 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in communications and political science from the University of Tennessee at Martin. During his undergraduate years, Jones gained experience as an intern for various media outlets.
After leaving journalism, Jones enrolled at Yale Law School. The infamous Rodney King beating and trial in 1992 had a profound impact on him, motivating him to join the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law as a legal observer during the protests. The incident fueled his growing discontent with the justice system and led to his embrace of socialist ideals.

Jones became involved with left-wing activists and co-founded the socialist collective STORM. He protested against police brutality, organized study groups on Marxist theory, and advocated for a multiracial socialist utopia.
He later founded or co-founded several non-profit organizations, including the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, Color of Change, and the Dream Corps. Dream Corps is a social justice accelerator that operates three initiatives: Dream Corps JUSTICE, Dream Corps TECH, and Green For All.
Media and Political Career
Jones has hosted or co-hosted several CNN shows, including "Crossfire," "The Messy Truth," "The Van Jones Show," and "The Redemption Project with Van Jones." He is a regular political commentator on CNN.
In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Jones as Special Advisor for Green Jobs. He has also been a fellow and visiting scholar at Princeton University.
Jones is a three-time New York Times bestselling author and the author of the book "The Green Collar Economy." He co-founded Magic Labs Media LLC and has produced the award-winning digital series "The Messy Truth" and the Emmy-winning "The Messy Truth VR Experience with Van Jones."
Recent Work
Jones previously served as CEO of REFORM Alliance, an initiative founded by Jay-Z and Meek Mill to transform the criminal justice system. He has also been a longtime associate and advisor to the late musician Prince.
