Biography of Vanilla Ice

American Rapper Vanilla Ice, whose real name is Robert Matthew Van Winkle, was born in Dallas, Texas in 1967. He grew up with his mother and her second husband, never having met his biological father.

Vanilla Ice

Early Life and Breakdancing

At the age of 13, Van Winkle began practicing breakdancing. His African American friends gave him the nickname "Vanilla Ice," which stuck with him despite his initial reservations.

Vanilla Ice

Emerging Music Career

By the time he was 16, Van Winkle started writing and recording his own music. One of his compositions, "Ice Ice Baby," gained national recognition despite its simple lyrics.

Signing with Ichiban Records

In 1987, while performing at the "City Lights" club in Dallas, Van Winkle met Tommy Quon, who recognized his talent. A few years later, Quon helped Van Winkle sign his first contract with Ichiban Records and release his debut album titled "Hooked." The album's most popular track remained "Ice Ice Baby," and a music video was made for it with a budget of around $8,000.

Vanilla Ice

Success with "To the Extreme"

In 1990, Vanilla Ice signed a contract with SBK Records, which re-released his album "Hooked" under the new title "To the Extreme." The album quickly became a bestseller in the hip-hop industry, reaching the top of the Billboard 200 chart and staying at the forefront of many American charts. However, it received mixed reviews from critics.

Decline and Personal Struggles

By 1994, Vanilla Ice's popularity had declined, and he attempted to reinvent himself by adopting a new image with dreadlocks and publicly embracing marijuana use. That same year, he released his second album, "Mind Blowin'," which failed to make an impact and was poorly received by many publications. Van Winkle fell into depression, battled drug addiction, and even attempted suicide.

Later Career

In the late 1990s, Vanilla Ice managed to overcome his drug addiction but struggled to revive his music career. His collaboration with the band "Picking Scabs" did not materialize as planned. In 1997, he married Laura, whom he had met at a party.

In September 2008, Vanilla Ice signed a contract with Cleopatra Records and released an album of remixes titled "Vanilla Ice Is Back!" However, the album received harsh criticism, with reviewers claiming that it belonged only in the artist's studio or on YouTube.

In August 2009, Vanilla Ice announced a six-year contract with StandBy Records for the release of his sixth studio album. However, the release date remains unknown.
