Saint Varlaam of Kiev

Early Life and Monasticism

Varlaam, an Orthodox saint who lived in the 11th century, was the first abbot of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. Born the son of a boyar to Prince Izyaslav Yaroslavich, Varlaam felt drawn to monastic life. He established himself in the caves of Kyiv alongside the venerable monks Anthony and Theodosius.

Establishment of the Monastery

As the monastic community grew, Varlaam was appointed its abbot by Saint Anthony. Later, Prince Izyaslav, also known as Demetrius in baptism, established a monastery dedicated to his patron saint, Demetrius, and appointed Varlaam as its abbot.

Later Years and Legacy

Shortly before his death, Varlaam traveled to Constantinople. During his return journey, he passed away in the city of Vladimir. His memory is celebrated on November 19 and September 28 (according to the Julian calendar) in the Synaxis of the Saints of the Near Caves of Kyiv Pechersk.
