Early Life and Education

Born into a family of intellectuals, Zlatarski received his early education at the Petropoulos Seminary in Veliko Tarnovo. After the untimely demise of his father, he relocated to Saint Petersburg, where he completed his secondary education at the First Classical Gymnasium in 1887.

Despite his family's aspirations, Zlatarski pursued his interest in history, enrolling at Saint Petersburg University. Under the guidance of renowned scholars, he delved into the study of medieval Bulgarian history and completed his doctoral dissertation in 1891.

In 1893, Zlatarski embarked on a specialization program in archaeology in Berlin. Upon his return to Bulgaria in 1895, he commenced his teaching career at the Sofia Men's High School and later at the Higher School (now Sofia University).
