Early Life and Family
Emmanuel Ioffe (1939-present) was born in Berezhno, Belarus, to Grigory Ioffe, a World War I veteran, and Kuna Frunkina. Ioffe's family had a rich revolutionary background, with his cousin Vera Slutska being a noted activist.
World War II and Evacuation
During World War II, Ioffe's family was evacuated to Kazakhstan, where his father was rejected from military service due to a war injury. Around 20 of Ioffe's relatives were killed in the Holocaust in Belarus.
Education and Early Career
After returning from Kazakhstan, Ioffe attended Berezhno Secondary School and graduated in 1956. He then enrolled in the History Faculty of Belarusian State University, where he excelled academically. After graduating in 1961, he worked as a history and social studies teacher before moving to Novopolie Agricultural College.
Marriage and Continued Education
In 1967, Ioffe married Eleonora Lifshitz and relocated to Minsk. He continued his education, enrolling in the part-time Economics Faculty of Moscow State University. In 1969, he entered the part-time graduate program of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
Academic Career and Research
In 1978, Ioffe was appointed as an assistant professor at the Department of Scientific Communism at Minsk Pedagogical Institute. He earned his doctorate in 1993 and became a professor at the Department of Political Science and Law at Belarus State Pedagogical University.
Ioffe made significant contributions to Belarusian historiography, particularly in the areas of the Holocaust, the history of Jews in Belarus, and the Great Patriotic War. He also received additional diplomas in Political Science (1993), Sociology (1996), and Holocaut History (1995).
Recognition and Legacy
Ioffe is known for his work as an active popularizer of historical knowledge, an educator, and a public figure. He has authored numerous publications and is recognized as one of the leading experts on the Holocaust in Belarus. His research and insights have greatly enhanced our understanding of these complex and pivotal events.
