Vasilis Constantakopoulos - Greek Shipping Magnate

Vasilis Constantakopoulos, also known as "Captain Vasilis" and "King of Containers," was a Greek shipping magnate and the founder of the shipping company Costamare. He was born in Diavolitsi, Messenia, Peloponnese in 1935.

Early Life and Career

During World War II, Constantakopoulos fought as part of the National Liberation Front (EAM). In 1948, he moved to Athens, where he began working and simultaneously attended evening school. In 1953, he started his naval career and climbed the ranks of the naval hierarchy.

Entrepreneurship

In 1962, at the age of 27, Constantakopoulos acquired his first ship through a loan. Then, in 1974, at the age of 39, he established the shipping company Costamare. During the shipping crisis of the 1982-1984 period, Constantakopoulos managed to acquire eight ships at a significantly low price. After the collapse of Greek shipping company Gregory Callimanopoulos, Constantakopoulos hired its professional staff and entered the larger shipping market.

Over the next twenty years, Costamare significantly expanded and regularly updated its fleet. By 2000, the company operated 35 vessels with a total displacement of 1,560,000 tons. In 2005, Constantakopoulos, who also led the Costamare S.A., presented an investment plan for the construction of four hotels, two golf courses, and other tourist and sports facilities in two coastal areas of Pilos, Peloponnese, with a total value exceeding 1 billion euros for the years 2005-2010.

Later Years and Legacy

In 2006, Vasilis Constantakopoulos handed over the management of his business to his son Kostas, who proved to be a talented leader and continued to grow the Constantakopoulos family's wealth. Vasilis Constantakopoulos passed away on the morning of January 25, 2011, in Athens. Condolences were expressed to the family by Antonis Samaras, the leader of the "New Democracy" party, Dora Bakoyanni, the leader of the "Democratic Alliance," Panayotis Nikas, the mayor of Kalamata, Theodoros Papateodorou, the rector of the University of Peloponnese, and members of the Greek-Chinese Chamber of Commerce Council, including Constantinos N. Yannidis.

Constantakopoulos's widow, Carmen, gave birth to three sons:

- Kostas, the eldest son, took over the management of the company in 2006.
- Achilles, who heads the investment company Costamare Inc., specializing in the tourism sector.
- Christos, the youngest son, manages a factory in Kozani.
