Vasilii Vasil'evich Zharko: A Russian Satirist and Journalist

Early Life and Education

Vasilii Vasil'evich Zharko was born into a Russian family. He studied at the St. Petersburg School of Law from 1892 to 1895 and later attended the Y. G. Gurevich Gymnasium from 1896 to 1899. He eventually graduated from the law faculty of St. Petersburg University in 1903.

Career as a Journalist and Satirist

Zharko made his literary debut with the poem "Pesn' bluzhdayushchikh ogney" in 1902. During the 1905-1907 revolution, he gained prominence for his satirical writings, including feuilletons, epigrams, and poems. His works were published in various Moscow and St. Petersburg periodicals, such as "Strekoza," "Spurt," and "Malar."

In 1911-1912, Zharko became the editor of the weekly illustrated magazine "Zhizn' i sud." He recruited both renowned jurists and writers to contribute to the publication, including A. I. Kuprin, Aleksandr Grin, and V. V. Voinov.

Acoustics and Legal Career

After the 1917 revolution, Zharko retired from literary pursuits. He pursued a career in acoustics, specializing in the improvement of acoustic devices. He also worked as a legal consultant.

Later Life and Impact

Zharko's satirical works continue to be recognized for their wit and commentary on Russian society. His contributions to the development of satire and journalism in the early 20th century remain significant.
