Early Life and Education
Born into a humble family of a priest, Vasilii was a sickly child. Despite their financial struggles, he was enrolled as an acolyte in the Kobolichinskaya Church on October 5, 1835. A year later, he became a novice at the Gerzhavsky Ascension Monastery in the Kishinev Diocese.
In 1841, with special permission from the Holy Synod, Vasilii entered the Spiritual College. In 1845, he progressed to the Kishinev Theological Seminary.
Monastic and Ecclesiastical Career
On April 4, 1848, Vasilii was ordained a monk, taking the name Varlaam. He was ordained as a hierodeacon two days later and as a hieromonk on May 9. After serving as the bursar of the archdiocesan household, he graduated from the seminary on June 15, 1851, and was appointed abbot of the Fruimoshski Dormition Monastery on November 14 of the same year.
In 1858, Varlaam enrolled in the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, graduating with honors in 1855. He was then appointed a teacher at the Ekaterinoslav Theological Seminary, where he rose to become the inspector in 1859. That same year, he was transferred to the Kishinev Theological Seminary.
In 1859, Varlaam was elevated to the rank of archimandrite. In 1862, he became the rector of the Kishinev Theological Seminary and abbot of the Kurkovski Nativity of the Mother of God Monastery.
Episcopal Service
On February 14, 1875, Varlaam was consecrated as Bishop of Totem, vicar of the Vologda Diocese. A year later, he became Bishop of Vyborg, vicar of the St. Petersburg Diocese. In 1880, he was appointed Bishop of Minsk and Turov.
Legacy and Achievements
Throughout his ecclesiastical career, Varlaam left a lasting legacy. He was known for his dedication to the Church and his scholarship, particularly in the field of anti-schismatic literature. He passed away on May 21, 1889, leaving behind a reputation as a pious and influential bishop.
