Vasiliy Gabashvili, a distinguished military commander, served both in the Russian Imperial Army and the Georgian Armed Forces. Born into a military family, he inherited a deep passion for service and strategy.

Early Career and Russian Service

Gabashvili's military journey began with his enlistment in the Russian Imperial Army. He honed his skills and leadership abilities, participating in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 and later in the First World War. In 1901, his exceptional performance earned him the rank of Colonel.

Commander and General

As his career progressed, Gabashvili rose through the ranks. From 1904 to 1908, he commanded the 79th Kurinsky Infantry Regiment. In 1908, he was promoted to Major General. By 1913, he had attained the prestigious rank of Lieutenant General.

World War I and Honors

During the First World War, Gabashvili's leadership qualities shone brightly. He commanded the 3rd Caucasian Rifle Brigade from 1914 to 1915, earning the illustrious Order of Saint George, 4th Degree. Subsequently, he led the Caucasian Grenadier Division from 1915 to 1916.

Commander in Georgia

In 1916, Gabashvili became the Military Commandant of Tiflis (present-day Tbilisi). He held this post until 1917, when he was appointed Commander of the newly formed Georgian Army Corps. His military expertise remained vital during the establishment of the Georgian Democratic Republic.

Retirement and Legacy

Gabashvili remained Commander until the establishment of Soviet power in Georgia in 1921. He then retired from active service, leaving behind a legacy of military excellence and leadership. Vasiliy Gabashvili's contributions to both the Russian and Georgian militaries are remembered with admiration and respect.
