Prince Vasily Alexandrovich of Rostov

Early Life and Family

Prince Vasily Alexandrovich, a non-possessor Rostov Prince, was the eldest son of Prince Alexander Ivanovich, himself the eldest grandson of Vladimir Konstantinovich.

Military Service

From 1420 to 1425, Prince Vasily served as a воеvoda (commander) in the Moscow army.

Folklore and Legends

According to tales collected by A.A. Titov from Khlebnikov's manuscripts, Prince Vasily's exploits were of a legendary nature.

Land Holdings

His domain included the present-day villages of Deboly, where his residence was located and which later became a hideout for Vasily Shemyaka's band of robbers, and Seltsa.

Friendship with Saint Isidor

Prince Vasily was close friends with Saint Isidor the Blessed, and together they visited the cenobitic monastery of Archbishop Dionysius of Rostov.

Miracle at "Sakhotskoe Bog"

In 1423, during the reign of Prince Vasily, his brother Ivan Loban, and Archbishop Dionysius, a life-giving cross appeared on the "Sakhotskoe Bog," a marshy area believed to be a haunt for sorcerers and magicians. From this miraculous cross, Prince Vasily commissioned four others.

Legacy

Prince Vasily had two sons, Semyon and Yuri, with whom the Lashtkin-Rostov dynasty came to an end.
