Biographical information of Vasily Levashov

Vasily Ivanovich Levashov, a decorated war veteran and captain of the first rank, was born on March 17, 1924, in the city of Amvrosievka, Donetsk Oblast. In 1930, his family moved to the village of Voronkovo in the Rybnitsky District of the Moldavian SSR, where his father worked as the chief mechanic of the MTS (Machine-Tractor Station). The Levashov family relocated to Krasnodon in 1931, where Vasily began his education at School No. 1 named after A. M. Gorky.

During his school years, Vasily developed a passion for photography and attended a string ensemble club at the V. I. Lenin Club. In 1939, he was accepted into the Komsomol organization of his school and transferred to the 10th grade when the Great Patriotic War broke out. As the front approached in September 1941, Vasily, along with many other Krasnodon residents, went to work at the Stalingrad Tractor Plant. When the front was halted, in February 1942, Vasily returned to Krasnodon and continued his studies in the tenth grade.

In April 1942, the Krasnodon District Komsomol Committee sent Vasily Levashov, along with Vladimir Zagoruiko, Sergey Levashov, and Lyuba Shevtsova, to study at the Voroshilovgrad School for Partisans and Underground Fighters. In June, Vasily and his brother Sergey underwent parachute training as part of a radio operator group. In early August, Vasily Levashov, as part of a sabotage group, was dropped behind enemy lines. For a month, they destroyed enemy objects, collected intelligence on the enemy, which Vasily transmitted to the partisan headquarters.

On August 29, during a radio communication with the center, the group was surrounded by fascists. With great difficulty, they managed to break through the encirclement. The decision was made to move towards the Donbass, with each member transitioning to a legal position. On September 5, 1942, Vasily returned to Krasnodon. Here, he became one of the leaders of an anti-fascist youth group and later a member of the underground Komsomol organization "Young Guard." As one of the leaders of the organization, Vasily worked towards expanding the ranks of underground fighters, writing and distributing leaflets, participating in combat operations, and acquiring weapons and ammunition.

When the arrests began, Vasily went to the city of Amvrosievka, where he hid with relatives. In September 1943, he joined the Soviet Army as a private and participated in the Dnieper River crossing, liberating the cities of Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Odessa. In April 1944, he was sent to officer courses by the command. Upon returning to his unit, he was elected as the battalion's political officer and later the regiment's political officer. He took part in the liberation of Warsaw and stormed Berlin.

In 1944, Vasily Levashov became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU). After the end of the Great Patriotic War, he graduated from the Leningrad Naval Political School and, from 1947, served on naval ships. In 1949, he became a student at the V. I. Lenin Military-Political Academy. After completing his studies, he served on military ships of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet.

Currently, Vasily Ivanovich Levashov works as a senior lecturer at the A. S. Popov Higher Naval Academy of Radio Electronics in Leningrad. In recognition of his participation in the fight against the fascists both in the enemy's rear and on the front lines, Vasily Ivanovich Levashov has been awarded the Order of the Red Star, the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st and 2nd degrees, the medals "For the Liberation of Warsaw," "For the Capture of Berlin," and others.
