Initially mistaken for enemy combatants, Margelov realized they were Swedish officers studying the possibility of assisting Finland. Recognizing their neutral status, he refrained from further hostilities, despite the potential political consequences. Bloodless Surrender on the Austro-Czechoslovakian Border
On May 10, 1945, General Margelov received orders to apprehend or eliminate three SS divisions and other enemy units attempting to surrender to American forces on the Austro-Czechoslovakian border. As the commander of a division, Margelov confronted the enemy headquarters, promising mercy and preservation of awards for immediate capitulation. Fully aware of their hopeless situation, the SS generals complied, expressing admiration for Margelov's courageous approach. Vasili Filippovich Margelov: A Life of Valor and Vision
Born on December 27, 1908, Vasily Margelov's military career began with his enrollment in the United Belarusian Military School. As a young officer, he rose through the ranks, exhibiting remarkable aptitude in training and leading his troops. By 1938, he became the commander of a battalion in the Belorussian Military District.
During the Great Patriotic War, Margelov's leadership and bravery shone through. From commanding disciplinary units to leading an elite regiment of Baltic sailors, he consistently demonstrated exceptional tactical skills. He also played pivotal roles in the Battle of Stalingrad, the crossing of the Dnieper River, and the liberation of Eastern Europe.
In recognition of his heroism and battlefield achievements, Margelov was honored with twelve Stalinist expressions of gratitude and the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. He played a pivotal role in the Victory Parade on Red Square, leading the victorious 2nd Ukrainian Front's honor guard.
