Early Life and Military Career

Nikolai Nikolaevich Obolensky was a Russian commander during the Napoleonic Wars. Born into a noble family, he was enrolled in the Narva Infantry Regiment as a sergeant in 1783. By 1785, he had risen through the ranks to captain. He resigned in 1792 but returned to service in 1801.

Campaigns against the French

Obolensky fought in the campaigns against the French from 1805 to 1807, earning several decorations. In 1811, he became an adjutant to Prince George of Holstein-Oldenburg. In 1812, he commanded the 3rd Ukrainian Cossack Regiment.

Patriotic War of 1812

During the Patriotic War of 1812, Obolensky participated in the raid into the Duchy of Warsaw. He also fought in the Battle of Kalisch, the raid into the Kingdom of Westphalia, and the battles of Lützen, Bautzen, Reichenbach, and Görlitz. For his service, he was promoted to major general in 1813.

Later Campaigns and Death

After the war, Obolensky received the Order of Saint Anne, 1st Class for his role in the Battle of Leipzig. He served in the blockade of Mainz and various other campaigns. In 1816, he became the acting general of the 2nd Army. He retired due to illness in 1822 and was buried in the Novodevichy Monastery in Moscow.
