After graduating high school, he embarked on a diverse labor experience, including stints as a lumberjack, loader, and rigger.

A Journalistic Journey BeginsIn 1972, Portyak enrolled in the Faculty of Journalism at the prestigious Kyiv National University. His literary debut came in 1980 with the publication of the novella "Mitsyo and Vovchur" in the Lviv journal "Zhovten."

From Novelist to ScreenwriterPortyak's first collection of novellas, "Kryslachi," was published in 1983, establishing him as a promising writer. He subsequently joined the "Molod" publishing house.
