Vasily V. Shuleikin: Pioneer in Marine Geophysics

Early Exploration and Optics of the Sea

In 1922, Vasily V. Shuleikin embarked on his scientific exploration aboard the hydrographic vessel "Pakhtusov" in the White, Barents, and Kara Seas. His research on the optics of the sea laid the foundation for his groundbreaking work in marine physics.

Establishment of the Plavmornin and Oceanographic Advancements

As a key member in the organization of the Plavmornin, Shuleikin played a vital role in equipping the "Persey." From 1924 to 1930, he continued his studies on the optics of the sea, water composition, and heat exchange between the sea and atmosphere. He also developed innovative instrumentation for marine research.

Foundation of the Marine Hydrophysical Station

In 1929, Shuleikin established the world's first marine hydrophysical station on the Black Sea, marking a milestone in scientific exploration. He later established and led the Marine Hydrophysical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

Discovery and Investigation of Infrasound in the Sea

In 1932, aboard the icebreaker "Taimyr," Shuleikin discovered the fascinating phenomenon of infrasound propagation caused by air movement above a wavy sea surface. This finding had the potential to forecast approaching storms.

Extensive Research and Publications

Shuleikin balanced his scientific work with pedagogy, establishing the Chair of Marine Physics at the Moscow Hydrometeorological Institute. His monumental two-volume treatise "Physics of the Sea," published in 1936 and 1938, synthesized his extensive research in marine geophysics. The second edition earned him the State Prize in 1942.

Contribution to Naval Science and Meteorology

During World War II, Shuleikin conducted vital scientific investigations for the Soviet armed forces. Afterward, he headed the Chair of Physics at the Naval Academy. In 1947, he was appointed Head of the Main Administration of the Hydrometeorological Service under the USSR Council of Ministers.

Legacy in Marine Physics

Until his passing in 1979, Vasily V. Shuleikin remained a pioneering figure in the field of marine physics, leading research within the Academy of Sciences. His ground-breaking discoveries and innovative instruments continue to shape our understanding of the ocean's intricacies.
