Early Life and Education

Jan Krejčí was born in Prague, Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic) on October 1, 1825. He studied chemistry and mineralogy at the Prague Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1848.

Career in Education and Research

After graduating, Krejčí became the curator of the mineralogical collection at the National Museum in Prague in 1849. In 1860, he was appointed director of a gymnasium in Písek. However, he returned to Prague in 1862 and resumed teaching at the Polytechnic Institute. Krejčí became a professor in 1864, and after the institute's transformation into the Polytechnic University, he served as its rector from 1867 to 1871.

In 1881, Krejčí was appointed professor at Charles University in Prague. He held this position until his death in 1887.

Geological Contributions

Krejčí was a renowned geologist. His seminal work, "Geology: or, The Science of the Forms of the Earth, with Special Attention to the Landscapes of Czechoslovakia," was published in 1879. In this groundbreaking work, he described the geology of his native land and established himself as a leading figure in the field.

Krejčí also authored numerous other publications on mineralogy, orography, zoology, and other scientific disciplines.
