Early Life and Career
Born in New York City on May 14, 1962, Vasily Strelnikov spent his childhood in Chevy Chase, Maryland. From a young age, he harbored a passion for becoming a radio DJ.
In 1975, Strelnikov moved to the Soviet Union. Despite initial cultural shock, he enrolled in the Moscow School of Working Youth. During this time, he forged lifelong friendships and gained valuable life experiences.
After high school, Strelnikov unsuccessfully applied to the Cinematography Faculty of VGIK. Instead, he found work as a photo lab technician at Mosfilm, where his fascination with photography took root.
Broadcasting Breakthrough
In 1980, the Soviet Union launched World Service of Radio Moscow, and 17-year-old Strelnikov became its first English-speaking announcer. He soon hosted his own international pop music program, "Vasily's Weekend," where he interviewed global superstars like ABBA, Carlos Santana, and Peter Gabriel. His fluent English also earned him a role in the educational program "English Language" on Central Television.
Strelnikov's work extended to dubbing and voicing films like "Cruel Romance," "The Courier," and "Come and See" into English. He also brought his vocal talents to popular animated series such as "The Mystery of the Third Planet," "Nu, Pogodi!," and "Holidays in Prostokvashino."
TASS TOP 20 and Radio Journalism
Strelnikov played a significant role in creating "TASS TOP 20," the first official Soviet radio chart. Compiled from music store surveys and audience votes, this chart became a staple in various newspapers and radio broadcasts.
In 1990, Strelnikov joined Echo of Moscow to host the interactive program "Evening Zoo." Two years later, he became a DJ and program director at Radio 7-Moscow. Among his most memorable experiences was his live reporting from Ostankino during the 1993 October Putsch.
MTV and Radio Klasika
In 1997, Strelnikov launched Radio Klasika as its program director. Two years later, he was appointed Director of Voiceover and Promotion for MTV Russia.
Weeken'ny Kapriz and Television Stardom
In November 1998, Strelnikov began hosting "Weeken'ny Kapriz" on MTV Russia. His unique style of presenting the program as a "therapeutic chaos" resonated with viewers.
Personal Life and Legacy
Despite his dedication to his career, Strelnikov maintains a private personal life. He values his loyal viewers and is grateful for their support. Strelnikov's contributions have shaped the landscape of music and broadcasting in Russia, establishing him as a beloved and respected figure in the entertainment industry.
