Childhood and Adoption

In the depths of 1920s Siberia, amidst a bustling marketplace, a young orphan named Vaska's fate took an unexpected turn. As he reached into a pocket, fate collided him with Grigory Zakharovich Mozel, a seasoned circus artist. Witnesses were quick to denounce Vaska and demand punishment, but Mozel had a different response. With gentle words, he claimed the boy as his own and whisked him away.

Mozel's love and mentorship laid the foundation for Vaska's future. As a true father, he immersed the boy in the world of circus, teaching him various disciplines and seeking guidance from master artists. Vaska's natural agility, coordination, and enthusiasm fueled his progress.

Early Circus Career

At the tender age of 15, Vaska made his debut as a circus performer, showcasing his versatility as an acrobatic eccentric, upper acrobat, and even as a clown. His ability to parody other acts earned him recognition. When a planned clown act fell through in 1935, Vaska stepped into the spotlight as a "carpet clown." Despite his lack of experience, his innate charisma and infectious energy salvaged the show.

Apprenticeship with Raphael Manukyan

Vaska's talent caught the attention of Raphael Manukyan, whose equestrian acrobatics act was renowned. The young performer eagerly joined Manukyan's company, where he honed his skills and absorbed the nuances of artistry from a master.

World War II

On June 22, 1941, Germany invaded the Soviet Union, plunging the country into war. Vaska's circus life was abruptly interrupted as he enlisted as a soldier. Amidst the horrors of war, he found solace in impromptu performances for his fellow troops. His diverse circus repertoire proved invaluable, providing laughter and a moment of respite from the harsh realities of battle.

Post-War Circus Career

After the war, Vaska returned to the circus, where he swiftly ascended to the ranks of master performers. Partnering with Osip Savich, he became a fixture in prestigious programs in Moscow, Leningrad, and Kiev. As the Soviet circus embarked on international tours, Vaska was among the chosen few to represent his country abroad.

The Clown's Persona

Vaska adopted the persona of a cheerful, innocent clown, reflecting his deep-seated belief in kindness and generosity. His iconic boxing sketch, where two opponents exchange blows only to end with a friendly kiss, became a testament to his message of reconciliation and empathy.

Legacy

For decades, the name Mozel graced circus programs, synonymous with the captivating performances of a beloved clown. Vaska's infectious laughter and enduring legacy continue to inspire countless aspiring entertainers.
