Early Life and Career
Velibor Vasović, a Yugoslav footballer of Montenegrin descent, was born on October 30, 1939. Following in his brother's footsteps, he joined the youth team of Partizan Belgrade at a young age. His debut for the first team came at the age of sixteen.
Captain and Champion
In the early 1960s, Vasović emerged as one of Europe's top midfielders. A highly skilled and versatile player, he excelled both offensively and defensively. As captain of Partizan, he led the team to five consecutive Yugoslav championships (1961-63, 1965) and became one of only four players to represent both Partizan and their bitter rivals, Crvena Zvezda Belgrade (1964).
Move to Ajax
After Partizan's defeat in the 1966 European Cup final, Vasović signed with Ajax Amsterdam, becoming the first foreign player in the club's history. Under coach Rinus Michels, he was converted into a center-back, where his experience, leadership, and defensive skills proved invaluable.
Success with Ajax
Vasović played a pivotal role in Ajax's golden era, helping them win three league titles (1966/67, 1967/68, 1969/70), two Dutch Cups (1966/67, 1969/70), and the European Cup in 1971. However, his second appearance in a European Cup final ended in disappointment, as Ajax lost to AC Milan in 1969.
Return to Yugoslavia and Later Career
After retiring from playing, Vasović returned to Yugoslavia and embarked on a coaching career, managing Partizan, Crvena Zvezda, and clubs in France and Egypt. He also worked as a commentator and lawyer.
Legacy
Velibor Vasović, known affectionately as "Vasko," is remembered as a legendary figure in Yugoslav and European football. He was a gifted player who led his teams to numerous trophies, and his leadership qualities were instrumental in the success of Ajax. Vasović passed away on March 4, 2002, leaving an enduring legacy as one of the greatest Yugoslav footballers of all time.
