Veniamin Zak: Surgeon and Innovator

Veniamin Vladimirovich Zak (1874-1938) was a renowned Russian and Soviet surgeon and a Hero of Labor. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the 3rd City Hospital of Taganrog, which continues to serve the community today.

Early Life and Education

Zak was born in Sarapool, Russia, in 1874. He graduated from Moscow University as a surgeon. In 1901, he relocated to Taganrog, where he established his private surgical clinic, which provided a range of complex surgeries.

Founding the Surgical Clinic

With the support of his father-in-law, Zak purchased property and built a two-story building that housed his family and the clinic. The clinic soon gained recognition for its quality of care and became a destination for patients from around the region.

War Years and Nationalization

During World War I, the clinic was transformed into a military hospital. After the establishment of Soviet power, the clinic was nationalized and became the 3rd Soviet Hospital, with Zak as its chief surgeon. The hospital expanded its services and became accessible to all citizens.

Medical Accomplishments

Throughout his career, Zak actively pursued medical innovation. He introduced the first X-ray machine to his clinic in 1910. He also mentored many aspiring surgeons, including renowned figures such as Bogoraz, Ladyzhensky, and Khrushcheva.

Persecution and Legacy

In 1938, Zak was arrested by the NKVD. He was imprisoned and died in the Rostov prison in October of that year. His family was evicted from their home and later executed during the German occupation.

Despite his tragic end, Zak's contributions to healthcare in Taganrog are remembered. The 3rd City Hospital, which he founded, continues to bear his name, honoring his legacy as a surgeon and innovator.
