Velimir Djuranovic: A Prominent Yugoslav Politician

Early Life and Career

Velimir Djuranovic, a Montenegrin political figure, was born in 1924. He joined the League of Communists of Yugoslavia (LCY) in 1944 and played an active role in the National Liberation War (1941-1945). After the war, he held various positions within the Communist Party of Montenegro (CPM), including Secretary of District Committees in Danilovgrad and Titograd.

Political Career in Montenegro

From 1963 to 1966, Djuranovic served as Chairman of the Executive Council (Prime Minister) of the Socialist Republic of Montenegro. He was elected to the Central Committee of the LCY in 1964. From 1968 to 1977, he was Chairman of the CPM Central Committee.

Federal Positions

In 1977, Djuranovic became Chairman of the Federal Executive Council (Prime Minister) of Yugoslavia. During his tenure, he negotiated a credit package worth 14 million Deutsche Marks from the Federal Republic of Germany in 1981.

Member of the SFRY Presidency

From 1982 to 1983, Djuranovic held the position of Chairman of the Assembly of Montenegro. In 1984, he became a member of the Presidency of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY). He served as Chairman of the Presidency from 1984 to 1985.

Resignation and Legacy

In 1989, Djuranovic and the entire government and Central Committee of the CPM resigned due to political unrest in Montenegro. His career marked a period of significant political change and development in both Montenegro and Yugoslavia.
