Yigal Allon: A Statesman and Military Leader of Israel
Early Life and EducationYigal Allon was born in 1918 in Kibbutz Ginosar in the Galilee. After graduating from the Kaduri Agricultural School in 1937, he joined Kibbutz Ginosar.
Military Career
In 1936, Allon joined the Jewish underground organization Haganah, led by Yitzhak Sade. In 1941, he became a co-founder of Haganah's elite strike force, the Palmach. By 1945, he had risen to the position of commander of the Palmach. During World War II, Allon established a sabotage and reconnaissance unit that worked closely with the British army in Syria and Lebanon.
War of Independence
During Israel's War of Independence in 1948, Allon commanded several combat operations and led the Southern Front at the end of the war.
Political Career
After the war, Allon completed his education at the Hebrew University and entered politics. In 1954, he became one of the leaders of the Ahdut HaAvoda party and was elected to the Knesset in 1955. In 1960, Allon studied at Oxford University for two years.
Ministerial Roles
Upon his return, Allon served as Minister of Labor, where he implemented significant reforms. In 1968, he became Deputy Prime Minister and later also served as Minister of Education and Culture in 1969. From 1974 to 1977, Allon held the position of Foreign Minister while remaining Deputy Prime Minister.
Death and Legacy
Yigal Allon died of a heart attack in 1980. A museum dedicated to his memory has been established in Kibbutz Ginosar.
