Early Life and Career
Vesna Dolonts, born Vesna Manasieva on July 21, 1989, in Moscow, Soviet Union, is a Russian professional tennis player. Born to a Russian mother and Serbian father, she began her professional career in September 2005, at the age of 16.
Rise Through ITF Tour
In 2005, Dolonts made her debut on the ITF tour, competing in three tournaments with a prize pool of $10,000. Although she won only one of those tournaments, her performance in early 2006 proved promising. She won seven consecutive matches, reaching the semi-finals of a tournament in Portimão, Portugal. By the end of that year, she had climbed to number 393 in the world rankings.
Breakthrough Season:
Dolonts broke into the top 200 in 2008 after reaching the quarter-finals of a WTA Tour tournament in Pattaya, Thailand. She continued to perform consistently, reaching the semi-finals of a $75,000 tournament in Monzón, Spain, and winning the first round of the Italian Open, defeating Dominika Cibulková.
WTA Tour Debut:
Dolonts made her WTA Tour debut in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in 2007. However, she lost in the second round to Pauline Parmentier. In 2008, she reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open but was unable to qualify for the main draw of a Grand Slam. She did make it to the quarter-finals of another WTA Tour tournament in Pattaya, Thailand.
