Early Life and Education
Valery N. Molodin was born on January 10, 1945, in the village of Orkhovo, Brest Region, Belarus, into a military family. He received his Ph.D. in 1984 and became a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1987. In 1991, he was appointed professor.
Archaeological Contributions
Molodin is a renowned archaeologist and expert in the ancient history of Siberia. His extensive research has spanned over 650 scientific publications, including 39 monographs. He conducted pioneering excavations in the Altai highlands, uncovering exceptional Paazyryk culture sites. These discoveries significantly enhanced our understanding of Eurasian ethnogenesis and cultural evolution 2,500 years ago.
In addition, Molodin's exploration of archaeological sites in Southern and Western Siberia provided a comprehensive framework for understanding ethnocultural processes from the early Bronze Age to modern times. His groundbreaking work on the ethnic and cultural origins of the West Siberian Plain population from the Upper Paleolithic to the late Middle Ages laid the foundation for future research.
Leadership and Recognition
Molodin has held prominent leadership positions, including Deputy Director for Research at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1993-1997). From 1997 to 2001, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and since 2001, he has been First Deputy Chairman.
Molodin's contributions have been recognized with numerous awards and distinctions. He is a member of the Presidia of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute in Berlin.
In recognition of his outstanding academic achievements, Molodin received the Order of Friendship of Peoples in 1999, the A.P. Karpinsky International Prize in 2000, and the Russian Federation State Prize in Science and Technology in 2004.
International Collaborations
Molodin has been instrumental in fostering international collaborations in archaeology. From 1990 to 1995, he co-directed the "Paazyryk" International Research Program. Since 2000, he has co-led an international research project with the German Archaeological Institute.
His research and mentorship have inspired numerous young scholars. As a professor at Novosibirsk State University, he has guided four doctoral students and 21 candidates of science. He also serves on the editorial boards of several renowned national and international journals.
