Education and Early Career

In 1916, Vasily Petrovich Bogolepov graduated from the Chișinău Gymnasium and enrolled in the St. Petersburg Institute of Railway Engineers. However, he later transferred to the Naval College. During the summer of 1917, he gained practical experience on Black Sea Fleet ships and participated in mine laying at the Bosphorus. In March 1918, he was discharged due to the disbandment of the college.

Service from 1918 to 1927

Bogolepov served as a watch officer and second assistant commander on various ships of the Baltic Fleet, including the "Narodivolets" and "Rosa Luxemburg." He also held staff positions in the Onega, West Dvina, and Caucasus military flotillas, where he handled operational and logistical matters.

Education and Senior Positions

From 1924 to 1926, Bogolepov commanded the Azov flotilla and the Naval Forces of the Far East. He later attended the Voroshilov Naval Academy (1927-1930) and specialized in artillery. In 1930, he became the senior assistant commander of the cruiser "Chervona Ukraina," and in 1932, the chief of staff of the Black Sea Fleet's cruiser division.

Arrest and Imprisonment

In 1937, Bogolepov was promoted to captain of the 1st rank and appointed to the teaching staff of the Voroshilov Naval Academy. However, in January 1938, he was arrested and held in detention until December 1940.

Return to the Navy and World War II

Upon his release, Bogolepov was reinstated in the Red Navy and became an associate professor at the Voroshilov Naval Academy. At the outbreak of World War II, he was appointed chief of staff of the Ladoga Flotilla, briefly serving as its commander in 1941. After a controversial failed landing operation, Bogolepov was dismissed, court-martialed, and sentenced to imprisonment, which was deferred until the war's end.

Post-War Service

In 1942, Bogolepov was assigned to the Pacific Fleet and served as chief of staff of the Iokanga Naval Base and later the White Sea Flotilla. He also held senior positions in the White Sea Defensive District and the Naval Scientific and Technical Committee. His criminal record was expunged in 1943, and he was promoted to rear admiral in 1944.

Later Career and Retirement

Bogolepov returned to the active duty in 1954 and served as the head of a research and development center for the Navy. He also held advisory and research positions until his retirement in 1963.
