Early Life and FamilyBorn:1730, Crete
Kumany came from a distinguished naval family. His father was an admiral, his son Mikhail Nikolayevich Kumany became a full admiral and member of the Admiralty Council, and his grandson Nikolay Mikhailovich Kumany rose to the rank of general of the fleet.
Naval Career
Early Service:Served as a midshipman and lieutenant on Russian ships under Admiral G.A. Spiridov
Commanded various vessels, including the brigantine "Zalety" and the frigate "Pobeda"
Archipelago Expeditions:
Participated in the legendary Archipelago expeditions under the command of Admiral F.F. Ushakov
Fought with distinction in the Battle of Chesme in 1770
Azov and Black Sea Fleets:Commanded the frigate "Kinburn" and other vessels in the Azov Flotilla
Transferred to the Black Sea Fleet after the dissolution of the Azov Flotilla
Distinguished Service:
Received the Order of St. George 4th Class for his wartime serviceAwarded the Order of St. Vladimir 4th Class and a golden sword for his valor in combat

Despite his lack of formal education, Kumany possessed remarkable intelligence, a quick wit, and a prodigious memory. He spoke multiple languages fluently but was only able to write and read in Russian. His courage was renowned, earning him the admiration of Empress Catherine II herself.
