Biography of Victor Heredia

Victor Ramon Cournou Heredia, an Argentine singer, composer, songwriter, and activist for civil rights, was born on January 24, 1947, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He grew up in Paso del Rey, a small town located 35 km from the capital. His father's side of the family has French origins, while his maternal grandmother belongs to the last representatives of the disappeared indigenous tribe called the Capayans, who lived in the Catamarca province.

Early Career and Social Activism

Victor Heredia's interest in the social issues of Latin America, particularly human rights and civil liberties, is evident in his work. He has performed and recorded with renowned artists such as Joan Manuel Serrat, Mercedes Sosa, Leon Gieco, Milton Nascimento, Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, Cuarteto Zupay, and many others.

Dictatorship and Family Tragedy

During the military dictatorship that followed the overthrow of the world's first female president, Isabel Perón, in 1976, Heredia's work was banned, and his sister, Maria Cristina Heredia, became one of the 30,000 people who disappeared without a trace. Heredia actively collaborates with organizations like the Mothers and Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, which seek justice for the crimes committed during the dictatorship and work to find the missing individuals.

Some of Heredia's most famous songs include "Todavía Cantamos," "Sobreviviendo," "El viejo Matías," "Dulce Daniela," and the celebrated composition "Razón de vivir."
