Born on October 16, 1979, in Los Angeles, California, Ryland Bushar is skilled in playing the guitar, woodwinds, various percussion instruments, synthesizer, and piano. In 2002, he released his first album 'They Ate Themselves' under 'The Robot Ate Me' and performed his first show in San Diego as part of a major tour, alongside artists such as Daniel Johnson, indie rock bands 'Tegan and Sara,' 'Metric,' 'The Blackheart Procession,' and 'Stars.' Skyscraper Magazine described his debut album as one of the most remarkable events of the year in experimental pop and rock music.

In 2004, his highly controversial and experimental double album 'On Vacation' was released, which Punk Planet described as a "hypnotic two-disc record that will give listeners a combination of nightmares and whimsical dreams." After the release of 'On Vacation,' Ryland signed a contract with 'Kill Rock Stars' and spent the next few years touring extensively across the United States, performing approximately 600 shows in three years. His performances heavily involved audience participation and were known for their unpredictability. During his shows, he would sometimes be dragged on the floor by the audience, wear masks, scream loudly, make random people from the crowd play musical instruments without any rehearsals, and even leave the stage after performing just one song.

His 2005 album 'Carousel Waltz' featured a significant number of traditional American folk compositions. The album, while equally idiosyncratic, was received very well and critics acknowledged Ryland Bushar's undeniable growth in skill. In 2006, he released the avant-garde album 'Good World,' primarily consisting of clarinet, rare percussion, and his falsetto vocals. Pitchfork Media, a portal dedicated to electronic music, expressed confusion and questioned who had beaten the frontman of 'The Robot Ate Me,' Ryland Bushar, with a club during the album's recording. Overall, this album proved to be commercially unsuccessful and left more questions than answers.

In 2008, Bushar released 'Seeds,' a limited edition wooden box set that included two hours of music on CD and vinyl, a DVD with videos, four vinyl records, lyric prints, a hand-painted t-shirt, a bag, a poster, and an illustration set drawn by his longtime colleague Daniel Gibson. Despite fans' interest in the edition, only 500 copies were made available for sale. In early 2009, Bushar completed a video session with French director Vincent Moon, where he performed songs from 'Seeds.' Additionally, on November 15, 2009, the double vinyl release 'Cowbirds and Cuckoos' was issued by 'Swim Slowly Records.' In February 2010, the label released the digital EP 'Better This Than Nothing,' a collection of songs from 'Cowbirds and Cuckoos.'
