An Unwavering Voice: The Life and Legacy of Viktor Mordun
Early Life and Literary DebutVictor Maksimovich Mordun was born on August 20, 1946, in the village of Vaskovichi, Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukraine. His literary debut came in 1967 with the publication of poems in "Literaturna Ukraina," after which he was promptly banned from publishing.
Political Clashes and Academic Exclusion
Mordun pursued his studies at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, but was expelled due to his perceived political unreliability. Despite this setback, he later completed his education at the Kyiv Institute of Theatrical Art.
Founding the Kyiv School of Poetry
Together with fellow poets Vasyl Holoborodko, Vasyl Ruban, and Mykola Vorobyov, Mordun founded and theorized the Kyiv School of Poetry. His works sought to explore the complexities of the human condition through a unique blend of tradition and innovation.
Censorship and Resurgence
Mordun's writings once again faced censorship during the Soviet era. However, with the advent of the 1980s, he was finally able to publish his poems freely. In the 1990s, he served as editor-in-chief of the literary journal "Svitlo-Vid."
Literary Achievements and International Recognition
Mordun became Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine. His works have been translated and published in German, including "Kryptogramme" (1996) and "Weisse Psalmen" (1999), and in numerous other languages worldwide.
Legacy and Legacy
Victor Mordun passed away in Kyiv on September 3, 2005, following a heart attack. He is buried in the city of Vyshnyove, Kyiv Oblast. His uncompromising poetry continues to inspire readers and contribute to the canon of Ukrainian literature. Mordun's unwavering voice and dedication to his craft have left an enduring legacy on the literary landscape of Ukraine and beyond.
