Kadriye Nurmambetova: The Nightingale of Dobruja
Early Life and EducationKadriye Nurmambetova, a Romanian Crimean Tatar folk singer and folklorist, was born on August 21, 1933, in the Dobruja region of the Kingdom of Romania (now Dobrich, Bulgaria). Her father was an artillery officer. When Romania ceded Southern Dobruja to Bulgaria during World War II, Nurmambetova's family relocated north to Medgidia, where her father became the garrison commander.
Nurmambetova studied law at the University of Bucharest, graduating in 1957. She became Romania's first female Crimean Tatar lawyer and practiced at the bar in Constanta.
Music and Folklore
Nurmambetova had a passion for folklore and folk music instilled in her from a young age. She performed with Crimean Tatar and Romanian folk ensembles from an early age. In 1950, she graced the stage of the Romanian Athenaeum alongside renowned national artists.
Recognition and Recording Career
In 1954, Tiberiu Alexandru, a professor at the National University of Music in Bucharest, praised Nurmambetova's performance, leading to her debut on radio. Her first record was released in 1960 on the Electrecord label, followed by subsequent albums in 1963, 1974, 1980, 1982, and 1989.
Folk Music Preservation
Nurmambetova learned her first folk songs from her mother. She developed a keen interest in collecting traditional songs, traveling through the villages of Dobruja and seeking out native informants from Crimean Tatar, Nogai, and Turkish cultures.
In 1957, she was commissioned to record over 90 traditional Tatar and Turkish songs for the Golden Sound Archive of the Institute of Ethnography and Folklore in Bucharest. Throughout her life, she made significant efforts to preserve Romanian Turkish and Tatar traditional music, mentoring young performers in folklore.
Legacy
Nurmambetova's final studio album, titled "Traditional Romanian Folk Songs of Tatar and Turkish Origin," was released in 2009 on the Electrecord label. As the "Nightingale of Dobruja," her legacy continues to inspire generations to come.
