Victor Kulbak, a French artist of Russian descent, was born into a military family. His mother nurtured his passion for art, enrolling him in an art school at the Academy of Arts. For four years, Kulbak immersed himself in classical painting techniques, his work earning him recognition and a burst of professional pride.
Seeking a Master beyond School
Recognizing the limitations of formal education, Kulbak sought guidance from an experienced master. However, his encounter with a renowned artist ended abruptly after a disagreement over teaching methods. Kulbak realized the need to pursue knowledge independently.
Apprenticeship with the Old Masters
Inspired by the Renaissance masters, Kulbak dedicated himself to studying their techniques and aesthetics. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and others became his true teachers, fostering a sense of continuity with the artistic tradition.
Conflict with Soviet Reality

Barriers to Official Exhibitions
Joining the Union of Artists, a prerequisite for obtaining quality materials, required participation in official exhibitions. However, strict censorship prevented any deviation from socialist realism, blocking Kulbak's path.
Underground Exhibitions and Suppression
In an attempt to appease rising discontent, the authorities allowed controlled exhibitions in closed institutions, under KGB and party supervision. Kulbak's exhibitions suffered the fate of suppression, closed down within hours by higher orders.
