Biography of Victor McLaglen
Early Life and Military ServiceVictor Andrew de Bier Everleigh McLaglen was born on December 10, 1886, in a small town in Kent, England. His father was a bishop, and Victor grew up in a family that eventually moved to South Africa, where he had four brothers. At the age of 14, Victor left his family and joined the British Army to participate in the Anglo-Boer War. However, he was not sent to the front and instead was assigned to the Guards at Windsor Castle. When his true age was discovered, he was discharged from the army.
Boxing Career and Circus Performances
After four years, McLaglen moved to Canada, where he made a living as a boxer. He achieved notable victories in the ring, with his most famous fight being against future heavyweight champion Jack Johnson. In addition to boxing, McLaglen also worked as a heavyweight in the circus during his time in Canada.
World War I and Boxing Success
In 1913, McLaglen returned to England and enlisted in the Royal Irish Fusiliers, serving in World War I. He rose to the rank of captain and became the chief of the Military Police in Baghdad. During the war, McLaglen resumed his boxing career and was named the Heavyweight Champion of the British Army in 1918.
Film Career and Oscar Win
Following the war, McLaglen remained in England and began his career in silent films. His career took off when he moved to Hollywood in the early 1920s. He successfully transitioned from silent to sound films and achieved his greatest popularity in 1935 when he won the Best Actor Oscar for his role in "The Informer." He was also nominated for an Oscar in 1952 for his role in "The Quiet Man" alongside John Wayne. McLaglen's roles in Westerns directed by John Ford were particularly popular. Towards the end of his career, he made a few appearances on television.
Personal Life and Legacy
Victor McLaglen was married three times. His first marriage was to Enid Lamont in 1919, and they had a daughter named Sheila and a son named Andrew, who later became a producer and director. After Lamont's death in 1942, McLaglen married Susan Brugman (1943-1948), and then Margaret Pumphrey in 1948. McLaglen passed away from a heart attack on November 7, 1959, in a small town in California, having become a U.S. citizen. He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to the film industry. He will always be remembered as a talented Anglo-American actor, boxer, and war veteran.
