Mary McDonnell is a popular American actress of theater, film, and television. She was born on April 28, 1952, in Pennsylvania and grew up in New York. After graduating from the University of New York, McDonnell enrolled in a drama school and was later invited to join the Long Wharf Theatre Company, where she worked for over twenty years.

Early Career
McDonnell first gained attention in 1980 when she showcased her talent in the play "Still Life" and received the "Obie" award. She then became one of the respected actresses on Broadway, performing in various productions for almost two decades.

Television and Film Success
McDonnell's breakthrough on television came in the early 1980s when she appeared in the soap opera "As the World Turns" (1984). In 1990, she made her film debut in the critically acclaimed movie "Dances with Wolves" alongside Kevin Costner. Her portrayal in the film earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She was later nominated for another Academy Award in the category of Best Actress for her role in "Passion Fish."
