Biography of Victor Topaller
Early Life and EducationVictor Topaller was a multi-faceted artist born in Moscow, Russia on October 19, 1957. His father, Alexander Viktorovich Topaller, was a renowned metrologist, and his mother, Lyudmila Zalmanovna Topaller, was a dedicated homemaker.
Topaller's passion for the arts emerged at an early age. After completing school, he enrolled in the prestigious Shchukin Theatre School as an acting student. However, his calling quickly led him to the faculty of Theatre Direction at the Russian Institute of Theatre Arts (GITIS), where he graduated with honors in 1981.
Career in the Soviet Union
Throughout his career in the Soviet Union, Topaller left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. He directed numerous stage productions for Mosconcert and Rosconcert, including elaborate variety shows, dramas, and musical performances. He also collaborated with the renowned humor troupe "Bim-Bom."
In 1989, Topaller's talent reached new heights with his screenplay and direction of the acclaimed stage play "Bird Market," featuring the legendary actress Liya Akhedzhakova. It became his final major work before leaving the Soviet Union.
Emigration to Israel
In 1990, Topaller and his family emigrated to Israel, where he found a new outlet for his creative spirit. He directed at a theatre school and became a prolific writer, contributing to prominent newspapers such as "Sputnik," "Novosti Nedeli," and "Globus."
Topaller's work extended beyond print media. From 1995 onwards, he became a prominent figure on Israeli television, hosting the political talk show "Rakurs" and the talk show "Vis-à-Vis with Victor Topaller," featuring notable figures from the worlds of culture and politics.
Journalism and Writing
Topaller continued to pursue his passion for journalism in Israel, writing for various local publications. He founded the newspaper "Russian Israeli," where he served as deputy editor-in-chief. As an author, he published the captivating novel "Russian Bullet for Yitzhak Rabin."
Move to the United States
In 2000, Topaller's career took an international turn when he was invited to work in the United States. He received a Green Card under the "extraordinary person" program, recognizing his exceptional contributions to journalism.
Topaller became a staff member at RTVi, one of the largest Russian-language television channels in the United States. He maintained his journalistic endeavors by collaborating with prominent radio stations, including "Narodnaya Volna," "Novaya Zhizn," and "Vse."
Radio and TV Programs
Through his various radio and television programs, Topaller shared his insights and perspectives on a wide range of topics. On Davidson Radio, he hosted three shows: "Polny Shalom," "Rikochet," and "Top Parade with Victor Topaller," featuring interviews with renowned artists and sharing stories behind beloved Soviet songs.
From 2008 to 2017, RTVi aired Topaller's weekly show "American Primer," which delved into the cultural, political, economic, and scientific aspects of the United States. He also hosted the programs "Point of View" and "Crossroads" on the same channel.
Awards and Recognition
Topaller's exceptional work was recognized with prestigious awards throughout his career. In 2001, he received the "Sammy" Award for "Best Author's Television Program." In 2002, he was honored as the "Most Popular and Professional Media Representative of Russian America." In 2014, he received the "Media Award" from the "Person of the Year in Russian-Speaking America" awards.
Personal Life and Legacy
Topaller found fulfillment both professionally and personally. He married Galina Vadimovna Topaller in 1978, and they welcomed a son, Alex Topaller. Sadly, Victor Topaller passed away in New York City on January 10, 2018, after a brief battle with lung cancer.
