Biography of Victoria Begalskaya

Victoria Begalskaya is a Ukrainian-Russian artist who was born in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukrainian SSR. She completed her education at the Kharkov State Academy of Design and Art. Since 2001, she has been living in Moscow.

Early Artistic Practices

Begalskaya's early artistic practices were focused on video art. However, starting from 2005, she began actively engaging in painting.

Collaboration with pop/off/art

From 2008, Begalskaya started collaborating with the pop/off/art gallery, where she held several solo exhibitions. Her notable exhibitions have taken place in important international venues. She also participated in the main project of the 5th Moscow Biennale.

Collaboration with Alexander Vilkin and Teresa

Since 2014, Begalskaya has been working together with Alexander Vilkin in the field of painting. In the same year, she, along with Oksana Sarkisian and Vlad Chizhenkov, founded the artistic platform Feminist Kitchen. Additionally, in 2014, Begalskaya, together with Alexander Vilkin and Diana Portland, established the creative union Teresa, which included both sex workers and artists. The goals of this union were to provide a public space for individuals involved in the sex industry, involve sex workers in socio-cultural processes, and engage in educational and communicative activities.

Artistic Projects with Teresa

Since its establishment, the creative union Teresa has carried out several participatory art projects. Two notable projects include the puppet shows "Aphrodite's Belt" and "Military Boots Ask for Tenderness." In 2015, "Aphrodite's Belt" was nominated for the "Innovation" award in the category of "Main Visual Project of the Year." Since 2016, "Aphrodite's Belt" has been part of the collection of the M HKA Museum.

Project with the Center for Independent Sociological Research

In 2015, Teresa, in collaboration with the Center for Independent Sociological Research in St. Petersburg, carried out a project that involved conducting sociological research through in-depth interviews with sex workers.
