Biography of Viggo Jensen
Viggo Jensen was a Danish gymnast, track and field athlete, shooter, and weightlifter. He was a champion and medalist at the 1896 Summer Olympics, becoming the first Danish winner at the Games.
Early Career
Jensen participated in the 1896 Summer Olympics, competing in four different sports. His main focus at the Athens Games was weightlifting, where he competed in both the two-handed and one-handed lifts. In the first competition, he had a fierce battle with British athlete Launceston Elliot. They both lifted the same weight of 111.5 kg, but the judges awarded the victory to Jensen. However, in the next competition, Jensen lifted 57 kg, which was 14 kg less than Elliot's result, and Jensen finished in second place.
Shooting Competitions
Jensen also took part in shooting competitions at the 1896 Games. His best result came in the free rifle event at 300 meters, where he scored 1305 points and finished in third place. He also competed in the military rifle event at a distance of 200 meters, but with a score of 1640 points, he finished in sixth place.
Athletics
In athletics, Jensen participated in shot put and discus throw events. In shot put, his exact result is unknown, but he finished in fourth place. In discus throw, he placed between 5th and 9th positions. His final event was gymnastics, specifically rope climbing, where he finished in fourth place.
Paris Olympics
Four years later, Jensen participated in the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris. He competed only in the shooting events. In standing shooting, he tied for 11th place with his fellow countryman Anders Nielsen, scoring 277 points. In kneeling shooting, Jensen scored 290 points, sharing 13th place with Norwegian shooter Hellmer Hermansen. In prone shooting, he again tied with Hermansen, but this time for 10th place, scoring 308 points. When all these results were combined, Jensen finished in 15th place. His last competition was the team shooting, where his team came out on top.
Overall, Viggo Jensen had a successful career at the Olympics, earning multiple medals and achieving notable results in various sports disciplines.
