Via Beinerte: A Latvian Cinematic Legacy
Early Life and EducationVia Beinerte, born on July 27, 1954, in Riga, Latvia, is the daughter of actor Dmitry Bokalov and cultural worker Dzidra Bokalova. She graduated from Riga Secondary School No. 49 in 1972, and went on to study at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) in Moscow, graduating in 1979. She later pursued a master's degree from the Latvian Academy of Culture in 1994.
Filmmaking Career
Beinerte began her filmmaking career at the Riga Film Studio, where she worked as a director of feature films from 1979 to 1989. In 1990-1991, she assisted Australian director K. Stender with actor coaching and translation for the documentary "Dzimtene" ("Homeland"). She also participated in the Swedish television corporation's feature film "Su?i Rig?" in 1993-1994, directed by R. Berglund.
Academia and International Collaborations
From 1992 to 1994, Beinerte taught in the Film Arts Department at the Latvian Academy of Culture, and from 1996 to 2000, she served as head of the External Relations Department. She produced master classes in acting, directing, screenwriting, and documentary filmmaking for Northern European and Baltic countries from 1996 to 1999. Additionally, she coordinated the Latvian program for the Nordic Baltic Cultural Festival in 1999-2000, and organized the workshop "From Grain to Loaf" as part of this program from 2000 to 2001.
Current Activities and Recognition
Beinerte is currently the director of SIA "Via Vija" and a freelance journalist, contributing to publications such as "Dien?", "Iev?", "Un?", and "Neatkar?gaj? r?ta av?z?". She has served as a jury member for film festivals and has been a member of the Union of Cinematographers since 1989. Her film "T?s dull?s Paul?nes d???" ("All Because of That Crazy Pauline") was recognized as one of the 25 best Latvian films ever made at the "Arsen?ls" film forum.
Personal Life
Beinerte is married to conductor Karlis Beinerts. She was previously married and used the surname Ramane, under which she is mentioned in various film publications.
