Birth and Early Life
Viktor Markovich Dudnichenko was born on May 25, 1923, in the village of Novoomalinovka, now part of the Shirokivsky district, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. He was the son of a peasant. After completing seven grades of secondary school, Dudnichenko worked as a tractor driver on a collective farm.
Military Service
In 1941, Dudnichenko was drafted into the Red Army and a year later graduated from the Chuguev Military Aviation School of Pilots. From April 1943 onwards, he served on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War as a fighter pilot in a La-5 aircraft.
Heroic Exploits
By January 1944, Senior Lieutenant Dudnichenko had flown over 120 combat missions, engaged in 26 air battles, and personally shot down 16 enemy aircraft. He was also credited with the daring rescue of a wounded soldier from the front lines.
In the summer of 1944, Dudnichenko's plane was shot down over the Carpathian Mountains. He managed to evade capture, cross the front line, and eventually rejoin his unit. By the end of the war, Dudnichenko had flown approximately 180 combat missions and increased his air victories to 22.
Post-War Career
After the war, Dudnichenko continued his service in the Air Force. In 1947, he graduated from the Military Flight Tactical Courses of the Air Force. In 1955, he retired as a Guards Lieutenant Colonel and settled in the city of Izmail, Odesa Oblast.
Awards and Legacy
Viktor Dudnichenko received numerous awards for his valor and achievements, including two Orders of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of the Patriotic War, 1st degree, as well as various medals. His name is inscribed on the memorial plaque of Military School No. 5 in Kryvyi Rih.
